A news artist is, first and foremost, a reporter.

If he's doing the job properly, he will also take turns as

  • a layout artist;
  • an illustrator;
  • an editor;
  • a diplomat;
  • a comp clerk;
  • a graduate student;
  • any one of a hundred other things he's never dreamed of doing or had a moment of formal training to do.

My graphics career has included all these jobs — usually several of them at once. But my primary drive has been my love of visual reporting: discovering the underlying patterns and structures of objects, places or events and explaining them with dynamic visuals with strong, clear writing.
